why vote yes?
Independence is vital to how we live our lives. As students, many of us are taking our first steps as independent people in the world, and it's this freedom to shape our futures however we desire, as well as the responsibilities that this brings, that we want in an independent Scotland.
Just think of the great things the Scottish Parliament has already done in just 15 years. We've introduced free personal care for our elderly people. We've introduced the smoking ban in public places, making us healthier. We've protected our National Health service from the cuts and marketisation that is happening elsewhere in the UK. Most importantly of all, we've kept Higher Education free for Scottish students, in the face of fees rising everywhere else, supported by all the Westminster parties. How much more could we do for Scotland if foreign policy, economic policy, defence and other issues were decided here?
Also, if we bring the level of government closer to the people it serves, then we can make solutions that are more closely tailored to the problems we face here. It's an opportunity to take responsibility for ourselves, stand on our own two feet and work together to make our country better.
For too long now, Scotland hasn't been reaching our potential. Economically, we are net contributors to the UK, but 20% of our children still grow up in poverty. In an independent Scotland, we can use the extra money to lift those children out of poverty and give them better lives.
And while currently Scots pay £8 billion to have nuclear weapons that we never asked for stationed near our largest city, with independence we could get rid of these terrible weapons and use the money saved to help create jobs and opportunities for our young people, contributing to world peace along the way.
With independence we can recalibrate our economy away from the bloated financial sector and create real growth based on our amazing natural resources, such as renewable energy, water and yes, oil and gas. This would give Scottish people the chance of a better future in a country which was more responsive to their needs and aspirations.
Together we can build a new and better nation. Let's start today. Let's vote yes.
